Sports in San Antonio: Another Reason to Love This City

San Antonio is the home of hospitality, history, and some of America’s favorite pastimes. Sports fans are guaranteed to get their adrenaline pumping at the thriving sports scene this city has to offer. It’s one more reason to love this city.

From football, basketball, and hockey, there’s a game to catch at just about any time of the year, and chances are you’ll be watching a winner.

Here’s a quick look at some of the sports teams and events hosted by the city of San Antonio:

San Antonio Spurs (NBA): You can’t talk about San Antonio sports and not immediately mention the Spurs. One of the premier franchises in the NBA, the Spurs have won five championships since 1999, have some of the league’s top players (Tony Parker, Kahwi Leonard, Manu Ginóbili) and one of the greatest and most uniquely charismatic coaches in the history of the league (Greg Popovich). They’re a team universally embraced by the city, and a regular winner.

San Antonio Rampage (AHL): If you enjoy hockey, San Antonio hosts an AHL team, the San Antonio Rampage. The Rampage are the top affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL, so many of the players you see playing for the Rampage are those being scouted for the top hockey league in the world.

Alamo Bowl: Every December, San Antonio plays host to the Alamo Bowl, which has featured some intense college football matchups in recent years. This most recent Alamo Bowl went right down to the wire, with #13 TCU defeating #15 Stanford 39-37. In fact, three of the last four bowls were decided by a touchdown or less, with one going into triple overtime.

Final Four: This year, San Antonio will host the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, one of the biggest sporting events of the year in America. Thousands of fans from all over the country descend on the host city of the Final Four every year, so it’s expected to be a major boon to San Antonio’s economy in 2018.

Suit up, get out, and represent your favorite team at one of San Antonio’s many places to enjoy a game. Get a group of friends together and get ready to get loud! There’s always something happening around the city for every sports fan. Don’t miss out!
